About TRRA Inc.

‘A Port Stephens Community Voice’

TRRA Inc. actively represents the Tomaree community on issues such as planning and development, protecting the built and natural environment. TRRA also takes an active stance on economic development, tourism, culture and other grass roots issues.

TRRA Inc. was formed early in 2008, initially responding to the decision by Port Stephens Council to disband the existing ‘Precinct” system of ratepayer representation. Since then TRRA has presented many submissons in response to, at times, controversial issues such as building heights and the Special Rate Variation sought by the council. Copies of these submissions are contained in the archives, available on the TRRA Inc. website. – Click Here

TRRA inc. networks with other local organisations on shared issues of interest, and works to encourage the Council to consult with the community and maintain transparency and accountability in its’ processes.

Objectives

The objectives of the Association are:

To act and be a representative voice for the ratepayers & residents of the Tomaree Peninsula in all matters that will enhance and protect their residential amenity and the local environment, both natural and built.

To provide a forum for discussion of the critical issues and needs of the local area.

To be a conduit of communication between the community, its elected Councillors and Port Stephens Council, on strategic matters and in decision-making, to assist Councillors and Council (see – http://www.portstephens.nsw.gov.au/ ) to better understand community priorities and needs.

To work with other community associations in the Port Stephens Local Government Area on issues of general concern.

To communicate with bodies outside the local area such as state and Federal Governments and private organizations in relation to matters impacting on the Tomaree community.

The Background of TRRA

Community interests were represented in the Port Stephens local government area by nine Precinct Committees which were established by Port Stephens Council in 1992. In December 2007 the Port Stephens Council withdrew its support for the Precinct Committees and replaced them with a Council-sponsored Residents’ Panel.

Following meetings of concerned residents representing several precincts on the Tomaree Peninsula, it was decided to form a new independent Peninsula-wide group called the Tomaree Ratepayers & Residents Association to give voice to community concerns and to encourage a more consultative working relationship with the Council.

The inaugural meeting was held on February 1st 2008. TRRA Inc. now holds regular meetings on the every two months and maintains contact by e-mail and post with its members.
