Nelson Bay Marina Resort

A development application was lodged in 2010 for the redevelopment of the Marina Resort on Magnus Street, Nelson Bay. The proposal involved the demolition of the existing building and the construction of a new resort hotel, conference centre and hospitality school.  The plan included three towers separated by view corridors. This was proposed as an alternative to extending the existing 5 storey structure across the whole site, which the applicant may be entitled to do under the existing DA approval.

TRRA recognized the critical significance of this site for the future of the local tourist industry and also the potential for any redevelopment to impact on the overall visual character of the Nelson Bay precinct. TRRA queried the desirability of the height of the proposed towers on the ridgetop site, and expressed concerns about potential problems with traffic generated and overflow of parking onto nearby residential streets and about signage, and also sought clarification as to  whether the resort could ultimately become a licenced ‘Hotel’ which could bring other problems.  The TRRA submission is HERE
