The next meeting is talking about tourism – I cannot be there, could someone mention the fact that no tourists are going to come to Port Stephens when the cosy coterie of taxi operators charge $130 from the airport to the Bay based on a taxi boundary excuse that requires two way charging. We obviously need a boundary system that centres on the airport so that the cost of going 30 k to Newcastle is the same as the cost of 30k to the Bay ( and that is certainly not $130 )

    • Neil M Hansford says:

Geoff, If only something could be done. For some past transport decision the airport is deemed part of the Newcastle taxi system. Just like if you go from Penrith to the Blue Mountains and cross the Nepean, you pay for the return journey. Try the cost of going outside the london M25 ringroad and see what that journey from Heathrow costs. Prices can be reduced if you pre-book a Nelson Bay taxi to pick you or guests up. Bet our taxi drivers would want a return fare if they went from the airport to darby Street! At least there is a bus service as an alternative!

  2. Neil Hansford says:

Wasn’t it Nelson Bay Tourism who dropped out from supporting TRRA and Eco network in trying to limit building heights over the whole Business district. They sided with the Council and against our well considered proposals that were in line with the community research.
The only thing they probably have in common with us is that they survive on grants from PSC that come out of our rates and could be spent on our infrastructure.
I wasn’t aware that generating tourism was a plank in our reason for being.

  3. Neil Hansford says:

The agenda for Tars seems to not address why Council puts so much money into tourism so private accommodation providers, cruise operators, food providers etc can make profits.
If there is no Tourist Levy on the beneficiaries why should residents have our meager infrastructure stretched and congested so these people make profits.
Why have our rates spent by council for private beneficiaries?
